The International Day of People with Disability (IDPwD) is celebrated on the 3rd of December every year. It is observed by the United Nations that is celebrated internationally to increase public awareness, understanding and acceptance of people with disability and celebrate their achievements and contributions.
For this year’s celebration, the theme was “Building Back Better: toward a disability-inclusive, accessible and sustainable post-COVID-19 World”. IDPwD is partnering with ABC to tell the different stories of people with disability in Australia.
More than 1,300 people shared and submitted their unique stories of strength and courage despite their disability— whether it’s physical, intellectual, mental illness, genetic condition or others. Their story features them rising above the challenges of having a disability, that aired for broadcast at ABC Network on the 3rd of December.
These stories are available for playback online along with the radio programs and digital articles in the ABC Network’s website.
Meanwhile, the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS), which provides targeted support and better coordination and access to services for people with disability in Australia celebrates the #IDPwD in a very fun and energetic way.
They gathered videos of people across the country to create a wonderful music video featuring people with disability dancing in the tune of the song ‘Better Than Ever’ by the Flight Facilities.
The message NDIS wants to portray in this video is that everyone can work together to make Australia inclusive to all people with disability.
More inspiring stories and videos of people with disability can be found at the NDIS website.
