ADHD Awareness Month

October is ADHD awareness month and, in this article, let’s learn more about ADHD.

ADHD or attention deficit hyperactivity disorder is a common neurodevelopmental disorder of childhood.  It is usually first diagnosed in childhood and often lasts into adulthood. Children with ADHD may have trouble paying attention or be overly active.

Signs and Symptoms of ADHD

It is common for children to have trouble focusing and behaving at one time or another. But sometimes children with ADHD outgrow these kinds of behaviour.

A child with ADHD may:

  • have high activity levels (hyperactive)
  • difficulty in remaining still for a long period of time
  • trouble in getting along with others

Three types of ADHD

ADHD has three types: inattentive type, hyperactive/impulsive type or combined type. Each type is being diagnosed based on the symptoms that have occurred over the past six months.

  • Inattentive type

People with ADHD of the inattentive type have trouble paying attention to details. They are easily distracted, often have trouble organizing or finishing tasks.  And often forget routine chores (such as paying bills on time or returning phone calls). Although there is no cure for the disorder, it can be treated with a combination of medication and behavioural therapy.

  • Hyperactive/impulsive type

The symptoms of this type of ADHD is impulsivity and hyperactivity. People with this type can display signs of inattention, but it’s not as marked as the other symptoms.

  • Combined type

This type of symptom shows above two types, they are equally present in a person with ADHD. But because symptoms can change over time, the presentation may change over time as well.
