Which do you prefer?

The choice of language is a hot topic at the moment.

The “powers that be” tell us to move from person-first to identity-first language.

The first time I designed an advertisement for our kid’s tracker with the heading ‘GPS tracking for Autistic Kids’, it was questioned.

Because I worked alongside Dementia Australia when we participated in Deloitte’s Decoding Dementia and it was drilled into me to say a person living with Dementia.

But here’s the thing.

Autism is not a disease.

It is a neurological developmental condition.  People do not ‘suffer from autism.

It is a difference in ability.

It is still a choice and people have the right to decide which way they prefer to be acknowledged.

Would love to know your thoughts on this topic!
